*A tank of gas – $37

*A night at the bars – $80

*Bail for drunken driving – $750

**Use your Master Card to get out of jail.

This is new way you can bond out of jail  in La Plata County in Durango, Colorado. The jail has a credit card kiosk where you can post your bail by using your credit card. In the past, if you are jailed you needed to call a bail bondsman or arrange for a friend or family member to bring cash or a certified check to get you out of jail.

However, the Sheriff’s Office has found that people often have a credit or debit cards when they are arrested. They are requesting to bond themselves out with a credit or debit card. As a result the Sherriff’s Department at the jail installed a kiosk that takes credit/debit cards.

Bail can cost $5,000 or more and having cash in hand can cause a greater risk of being lost or miscounted. The deputies had to make bank runs twice a week but with the new kiosk they only go to the bank once every other week. The kiosk also takes cash and can hold up to 1,200 bills and accepts all denominations from $1 to $100 bills. The kiosk is owned by EZ Card & Kiosk, LLC and empties the machine twice a week.

Kiosk customers are charged a $10 service fee plus 7 percent of the bail amount. If the bail is more than $2,000, the $10 fee is waived. If you use a Bail Bondsmen, they keep 10 to 15 percent of the bail. Obviously this is upsetting them because of loss of revenue.

The kiosk can also do more than just bail you out of jail. The kiosk allows inmates or family members to add money to an inmate’s commissary fund so they can purchase variety of items inside the jail.

The use of the kiosk offers low-level offenders to bond out sooner. You can say, with this new method of bonding out of jail, you now have a “get out of jail card.”  It still costs a lot of money, but you can be in and out within hours instead of days or weeks.
