Copper thieves busted

Posted on: December 10, 2010

Whether you still money, cars or even copper, you are still a thief. Recently, the Colorado Springs police busted suspected copper thieves. Once again, criminals are not the brightest bulb in the pack. These five thieves continued to go back to the same scrap yard to sell the stolen copper. That’s when the owner of the scrap yard recognized them and called police.

The thieves targeted air conditioning units in abandoned and vacant buildings including some in shopping centers around the city. Police believe that they are responsible for about 90 percent of the copper thefts in the Colorado Springs area over the last year. This amounted to nearly $2 million in stolen and damaged property.

Now these copper thieves are in custody and were arrested on suspicion of felony theft and criminal mischief. They are being held on $100,000 bond each.
