Facebook protest for government shutdown is trashy

Posted on: April 8, 2011

According to Fox News article, democratic activists are planning to protest the government shutdown by dumping trash at Boehner’s home on Saturday. The reason for this trashy display of protesting is that Washington, D.C. residents pay taxes but have no voting representation in Congress. If the government shuts down, garbage pickup in the area will be stopped. You see, garbage men must be federal workers who you and I are paying for. Unlike other cities and towns that are run by local government, D.C. comes under the Federal government.

Democrats Jonah Goodman and Nolan Treadway organized the trash-dumping day. Goodman identifies himself as the lead designer for the Democratic National Committee’s website until December and Treadway says he is the political and logistics director for the liberal group Netroots Nation.

So far, more than 5,600 people have committed to protesting at Boehner’s house Saturday morning. But reaction from Facebook users has been mixed, judging by the comments on the page. One person said that she would dump her trash in front of the White House. Another said that they would mail the trash to the White House. Surprisingly, no one offered to dump their trash at Harry Reid’s house, the culprit in this government shutdown.

Actually, the organizers say that their protest isn’t over a budget not getting passed in Congress but rather the lack of control that DC’s local government has over its own affairs, which would be made painfully clear during a work stoppage. This type of protest shows a lot of maturity on the part of the Democrat National Committee members, doesn’t it?

In fact, the one problem with dumping trash in front of John Boehner’s house is that he lives in Ohio and not in D.C. Once again, these protestor organizers are not as smart as they think they are.
