Osama Bin Laden’s code name offends some people

Posted on: May 4, 2011

That’s right; the Native American Indian is offended by the code name and mission that killed Osama Bin Laden. The military used the code name “Geronimo”for the raid on the compound. Geronimo aka Goyahkla (One Who Yawns) was an Apache that eluded capture for many years.

A database search of news stories shows that, while military leaders sometimes compared bin Laden’s elusiveness to Geronimo’s, there is no news account of calling the al-Qaeda leader “Geronimo” until this past weekend. But the Apache leader’s name has often been used in the name for projects in Afghanistan, such as the Marine Forward Operating Base Geronimo in the Helmand
province, reports show.

Military code names and nicknames have a long history, dating to when written or radio transmissions could be easily intercepted, and thus the name for a secret language that only some people involved in a particular operation would understand.

Have we become so politically correct that even calling a mission after a famous Native American who eluded capture is seen as a slur against them?
